Performance budgets for Shopify: what matters and why

Google gives you a score out of 100. Your agency waves a Lighthouse report at you. But which performance metrics actually affect your bottom line and what targets should you set?

The Metrics That Matter

Not all Core Web Vitals are created equal for ecommerce. Here is how they rank by commercial impact:

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) is the single biggest correlation we see with conversion rate drops on mobile. Every 100ms improvement in LCP above the 2.5s threshold correlates with a measurable uplift in add-to-cart rate.

CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) affects trust more than speed. When elements jump around the page as it loads, customers lose confidence. Particularly damaging on product pages where the "Add to Cart" button shifts position.

INP (Interaction to Next Paint) matters most on interactive pages: product configurators, filter-heavy collection pages and the cart/checkout flow.

TTFB (Time to First Byte) is largely outside your control on Shopify's infrastructure, but you can influence it with good caching strategy and minimal app middleware.

Setting Realistic Targets

For Shopify stores, these are achievable targets that correlate with good commercial performance:

  • LCP: Under 2.0 seconds on mobile (target 1.5s)
  • CLS: Under 0.1 (target 0.05)
  • INP: Under 200ms (target 150ms)
  • Total JavaScript: Under 300KB compressed
  • Total page weight: Under 2MB on product pages

The Image Problem

Images are responsible for 60-80% of page weight on most Shopify stores. The fixes are straightforward but rarely implemented properly:

  • Use Shopify's built-in image CDN with proper sizing parameters
  • Do not lazy-load your LCP image. Use fetchpriority="high" on your hero image
  • Serve WebP or AVIF formats via the CDN
  • Set explicit width and height attributes to prevent CLS

Governance

Performance degrades over time unless you actively govern it. Set up:

  • Monthly Lighthouse CI runs against key page templates
  • Alerts when LCP exceeds your threshold
  • A review process for any new app or script installation
  • Quarterly performance reviews as part of your ecommerce roadmap
Key takeaways
  • LCP has the strongest correlation with conversion rate on mobile
  • Images account for 60-80% of page weight. Fix images first
  • Do not lazy-load your hero image. Use fetchpriority="high" instead
  • Set up monthly automated performance checks and enforce budgets
