The real cost of app sprawl
The average Shopify store we audit has 18 apps installed. The average number actually needed is closer to 8. Every surplus app adds render-blocking JavaScript, increases your Total Blocking Time and chips away at your conversion rate.
How Apps Affect Performance
Each Shopify app injects its own JavaScript bundle into your storefront. Even apps that claim "zero impact on speed" are loading code. The cumulative effect is significant.
We recently audited a store doing £3m/year with 24 apps installed. Removing 11 unnecessary apps reduced their Total Blocking Time by 1.2 seconds and improved their mobile conversion rate by 0.4 percentage points.
The Audit Process
Start by listing every app and categorising them:
- Critical: Payment, shipping, tax. These stay
- Revenue-generating: Upsell, cross-sell, loyalty. Measure their actual contribution
- Convenience: Apps that save time but have alternatives. Evaluate cost vs benefit
- Legacy: Apps installed months ago that nobody remembers why. Remove immediately
Common Offenders
Some app categories are consistently problematic:
- Review apps: Many load heavy JavaScript bundles. Consider native Shopify reviews or lightweight alternatives
- Chat widgets: Live chat scripts are often the single largest third-party payload. Use async loading
- Pop-up builders: Multiple pop-up apps running simultaneously is more common than you would think
- Analytics overlays: Heatmap and session recording tools add significant overhead
The Script Audit
Beyond apps, check your theme's layout files for hardcoded third-party scripts. We regularly find:
- Abandoned A/B testing scripts still running
- Multiple analytics tags doing the same job
- Social media pixels loaded on every page instead of conversion pages only
- Font files loaded from external CDNs instead of self-hosted
Building a Performance Budget
Set a total JavaScript budget for your storefront. We recommend under 300KB compressed for the initial page load. Track it monthly. Every new app or script addition must justify its weight against this budget.
- The average store has 10+ unnecessary apps adding load time
- Removing surplus apps can improve mobile conversion by 0.3-0.5 percentage points
- Set a JavaScript budget of 300KB compressed and enforce it monthly
- Audit third-party scripts in theme files, not just the app store
